Guest “kitty” masquerade

Today’s guest “kitty” isn’t really a kitty at all – but sure makes a good pretence – and I just felt so incredibly LUCKY to see one.  While in Tanzania (in the Selous Game Reserve) in 2012 I fell in love with a visitor to camp.

We were heading out to the big table set in the clearing for dinner and the guides started talking about “Jenny” joining us.  It turned out they were talking about this cutie.

They are called Genet Cats (hence the “Genny” they were talking about)- but she’s not really a cat at all .  In scientific terms Genets are in a genus all their own and quite separate from cats.

Despite not being related during her visit to the clearing she displayed a lot of “kitty like” behaviour explaining how in common terms they get called cats.

The guides said they never fed her (and no one did that evening), though I suspect she is hard to resist and that when we weren’t looking she got some scraps. She sat and watched us, she played a bit with some fluff on the ground and she went and climbed a tree near us and watched from there too. Her movements were all cat.
